Usually yes, and it's often the single biggest improvement an older Yorkshire house can make — solid stone, brick and no-fines walls have no cavity to fill, so the insulation has to go on the outside. What decides it is the condition of the substrate, the eaves and reveal details, and whether the damp-proof course can be terminated cleanly. We'll survey it and tell you honestly if it isn't the right first move for your house.

Yes. The family is particularly proud of its stonework and has completed projects on Grade II listed buildings. That work needs lime mortars, matched stone and breathable build-ups rather than modern sealed detailing — and rather more patience with the consent process, which we'll walk you through.

Often very much so, provided it's done in the right order. Air leakage and the loft first, then walls and floors, then glazing and services. Spending on new windows while a house is still leaking its warm air out through the joist ends and the loft hatch is the most common expensive mistake we see.

With a site visit and an honest opinion, at no charge. We look at the property properly, talk through what you're trying to achieve, and tell you what is and isn't worth doing. If there's already an architect or an engineer involved, we'll review buildability with them.

For extensions and most retrofit work, usually — we can stage the work so the house stays habitable, with dust protection and the mess kept where it belongs. For whole-house renovations and major structural work it's often quicker, cheaper and considerably less miserable to move out for a defined period. We'll be straight with you about which yours is.

We work to the engineer's design on structural work and coordinate inspections as part of the programme. We'll tell you at the outset what needs an engineer, what needs building control sign-off, and what needs planning permission — and what needs none of the three.

Snagging, sign-offs and a proper handover. On thermal and retrofit work we also talk you through what's been installed and how the house should behave afterwards — how it heats, how it ventilates, and what to expect in the first winter.
