Structural alterations: propped, needled and opened up

Structural work looks alarming and is, done properly, the most controlled part of a build. Here the existing floor and the wall above are carried on a forest of adjustable props and timber needles while the masonry beneath is removed.
You can see the sequence in the photograph: the new steel already painted and in place overhead, fresh timber joists running off it, blockwork built up to form the new support, and the props still standing until everything has taken its load.
Nothing is struck until the permanent structure is bearing properly. That's the difference between an opening that's simply made and an opening that's made safely — and it's why we work to the engineer's scheme rather than to a rule of thumb.
Work carried out
- Temporary works: adjustable props and timber needles installed
- Existing masonry removed beneath the supported structure
- New steel beam installed and bearings formed
- New timber floor structure hung from the new beam
- Blockwork piers and supporting walls built up
- Props struck in sequence once load was taken
