Wrapping a solid-wall house so it stops losing its heat through the walls
W T Hall describe themselves as Baumfit approved installers for external wall insulation, and it's a substantial part of the work. EWI suits the many Knaresborough, Harrogate and Leeds houses built with solid walls — stone, brick or no-fines concrete — where there's simply no cavity to inject.
Done properly it's a whole-envelope job, not a cladding job: the detailing around eaves, reveals, sills, thresholds and services is what decides whether the house stays dry and the render stays on.
What actually happens
Scaffold up, existing render or fixtures removed, substrate checked and made good. Insulation boards are fixed and mechanically anchored, beads and mesh are bedded into the base coat, then the finish coat goes on. Rainwater goods, sills, vents and meter boxes are all re-set to suit the new wall thickness.
The details that matter
Window and door reveals insulated so the frames aren't left as cold strips. Eaves and verges extended. A clean, ventilated termination at the damp-proof course so nothing wicks up from the ground. Get these wrong and you've moved the condensation rather than removed it.
Finishes
Through-coloured silicone and mineral renders in a range of textures and colours, and rendered-and-clad mixes where a full render would look wrong on the street. On some properties partial EWI to the rear and gables is the sensible compromise.
An honest note on what it will and won't do
EWI transforms wall heat loss. It does not fix a draughty loft hatch, single glazing, or an oversized boiler cycling itself to death. We'll tell you where the rest of your heat is going before you spend money on the walls.
